Debra Mauritz, who was the first female from Nakawakawa Village, Bua to be crowned the 2022 Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North, hopes to visit Beqa Island.
The 21-year- old being brought up in Taveuni Island values various culture and traditions that Fiji is known for. Recently, the Fiji National University student pursuing Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, was featured in the festival’s car text video promotion sponsored by Vodafone Fiji Limited.
“I am extremely happy and proud to be part of this community-based festival that has been investing in numerous much needed projects benefiting the greater area of Northern Division,” Ms. Mauritz said.
Currently she is undergoing a flight attendant training with Fiji Airways and in few months will be seen in Fiji Link local flights.
How many places have you visited around Fiji?
I have travelled around Viti Levu and Vanua Levu including islands such as Taveuni, Qamea and Kioa.
What is the one place in Fiji you would take visitors to, and why?
Taveuni Island also known as the Garden Island of Fiji. I grew up there. There are many beautiful and enjoyable places for tourists to visit, especially the famous Tagimoucia lake and flowers.

What is your favourite place for coffee/pie, and why?
For coffee and pie, I prefer homemade prepared by my mother. She makes the best of the best.
What is your favourite backyard spot, and why?
The beaches and sea at home in Daria, Wainunu, Bua. Looking at the view soothes my mind as there is no place like home.
Name one place in Fiji that remains on your bucket list, and why?
Beqa Island. I have always heard stories, news and watched videos of Beqa people walking on real fire. This is one place that I would like to visit and to witness the ritual being performed because stepping or walking on real fire is such a great gift passed on from older generations.
