Life begins at 50, says a business executive and businessman, Patrick Wise.
He recently launched his roadside stopover.
Mr Wise says it’s never too late to pursue a goal or a dream.
Soccer Fame
Navua’s own former football star, Patrick Wise, met with national fame in his formative years.
He was just 16, when his dribble, tact and speed on the field attracted the attention of many national soccer coaches.
Mr Wise soon became a coveted midfielder.
His soccer stunts at the time were the highlights of his sporting career as the team went on to win the promotion relegation to reach Super Premier division.
Premier Division
At that age, he had the opportunity to be part of the team as some senior players were suspended.
“I took the opportunity with both hands and my football career took off,” he said.
Now, at the dawn of his 50th birthday, he says he is hitting the prime of his life.
“We’re more maturednow and likely to think through decisions,” Mr Wise said.
Operating Hours Under Review
Chicken and Ice Cream Shack is a sight for sore eyes, along the Queens Road at Navua.,
The lofty road-side structure, with its brightly polished wooden walls and glass panels, is first of many fast food establishments Mr Wise plans to open.
The investment, valued at around $100,000, was a transition from his 10 years as a food catering business, which operated under the same name.
“We would have a stall at every festival and carnival in Suva,” he said.
With the lifting of curfew restrictions, opening hours are expected to be reviewed in June.
“It is the ultimate plan to operate 24 hours,” he said.
Anti-Drug Campaign
Mr Wise is originally from Navua.
He attended St Thomas Primary School in Lautoka, before moving home to attend Vashist Muni College.
He was described as one of the country’s most stylish midfielders, demonstrating dribbling skills with speed and agility that were at the time second to none.
He went on to play for Nasinu, Suva, Lami and Rewa.
His stint with Rewa was the longest he had served a soccer club.
Mr Wise was 34 when he hung his boots.
He championed anti-drug efforts within the soccer fraternity, right after his national outburst about the reality within the sport.
“I revealed it all,” Mr Wise said.
“When the team travels to a match, the bus is divided into two – those who smoke drugs sit at the back, while those that do not smoke drugs sit in the front.
“That was a normal thing.”
Business Background
He has served Goodman Fielder for the past 24 years, where he has learnt the ropes about business management.
He continues to serve the company in a managerial sales role.
“Football has taught me a lot about discipline so that’s an advantage for me,” Mr Wise said.
“Some of my competitiveness and discipline learnt on the field.
“I apply it in my day to day work.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to play the sport for so long without serious injury.”
