Fiji has potential to grow more food, Fiji Rice Limited general manager Ashrit Pratap.
He made the point after realising Fiji was heavily dependent on imports.
“I encourage everyone to grow their own food in whatever capacity they can,” Mr Pratap said.
The Koronubu native of Ba, is a graduate of University of the South Pacific where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Management and Public Administration.
He comes from a farming background, and has future plans to professionally continue working in the agriculture sector.
Mr Pratap’s ultimate dream is to personally invest in his own farm.
COVID-19 Impact
The global COVID-19 pandemic encouraged more focus on agricultural need and development, and food security, he said.
There was no downtime, and no job losses at Fiji Rice Limited.
“We have both commercial and social responsibility to produce rice for our people so we are operating at full capacity,” Mr Pratap said.
Operations costs have increased, he said.
To address this. Fiji Rice Limited implemented measures, such as:
– improving its mills,
– assisting farmers in terms of free cartage to the mill,
– offering above-world-market-price of paddy,
– medical insurance, and
– parametric insurance scheme for farmers.
“The company also carried out farm projects and joint ventures with potential farmers and landowners,” Mr Pratap said.
“The idea is basically to get all stakeholders working together to assist each other in times of crisis.”
