Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive, Sundresh Chetty, says cane farmers are happy with the harvesting season.
“The growers are getting settled and soon we will be seeing steady supply of cane to the mills,” Mr Chetty said.
He said the farmers were working hard on their farms and this was a good sign.
Challap Reddy, 57, from Malolo, Nadi, said as a farmer, the harvesting season has started on a good note.
“I am happy the weather conditions are favorable and the cane cutters in my gang are working hard to supply sugarcane to the mills,” Mr Reddy said.
Meanwhile, the mechanical harvester is yet to be used in the Fiji Sugar Corporation estates in the Western Division.
According to FSC, it is awaiting some paperwork to begin operations.
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman, Abdul Khan said they are trialing both the whole stocks as well as the billet cane harvesters for use.
