The first consignment of fresh ginger into the Australian market from Fiji is expected to be in August.
This is after the Australian Government granted access of ginger exports from Fiji in February.
The first three consignments is expected to be of high quality and which meets Australian standards.
In a bid to prepare ginger farmers for this export, a Ginger Refresher Course was held at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva.
The one day workshop was funded by the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Program (PHAMA).
Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Ropate Ligairi said: “With the opening of marketing opportunities, this will surely broaden our economic base and provide employment to more of our ordinary people.
“We are trying to ship the first fresh ginger consignment to Australia but first we must look at our own standards.”
