Sugarcane farmers in the 38 sectors of the four sugar mill areas are being taught the various techniques for farming to further improve cane production.
The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, which is part of the on-going stakeholders consultations, is using the consultations to educate farmers of these techniques.
Research officer at the Institute, Prem Naidu, said under the Technology Transfer Programme, farmers are advised on the four different aspects.
“Under the programme, we advise growers on weed management, sugarcane varieties, fertiliser recommendations and quality seed cane,’’ Mr Naidu said.
He said these four aspects play a vital role in uplifting the sugarcane production level.
“Earlier this month in Ba during the consultations, we showed farmers how the weeds were controlled at this farm,” he said.
“Pre-emergence weedicide was applied two days after completion of planting. The pre-emergence weedicide application helped in good establishment of the cane.”
