Westpac supports financial education for women

Westpac continues to support women doing business in Fiji by providing essential skills to help them sustain their business.
The bank organised a workshop this week for women to educate and enhance their knowledge on the financial side.
The workshop was conducted by Westpac marketing and communications co-ordinator, Jyoti Maharaj.
She covered basic knowledge about Balance Sheet, Income Statement, how to write Business Plan, a knowledge that women in business believed to lack to conduct their business effectively.
Ms Maharaj said by understanding how businesses operate, you can start to make confident and informed business decisions that can help your business to be profitable and sustainable.

Why the need?

The bank says it understands that starting or operating a business is tough for micro entrepreneurs and small business owners hence organised a Business Basic Workshop with a group of ladies.
Business Basic workshop introduced to the participants the fundamental concepts of business.
And that is to determine what a business is and factors needed to be considered before starting a business and the different sources of funding options available to start a business.
Participants learned the importance of recording business sales and expenses and produced an income statement.
During a group activity, the participants had to work on a case study and do up a balance sheet and the room filled with excitement when their balance sheet had balanced.
Being a highly interactive workshop, the ladies shared their experiences and also learned a lot from each other.
One of the participants Sushila Narayan said that she was very fortunate to attend this program and have learnt so many business ideas
