The Australian Government and Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (Fiji Ports) are working together to consider the future of the Lautoka foreshore area.

A grant agreement signed between the Australian Government and Fiji Ports last week is expected to support international technical expertise to propose development options for the foreshore area to support future growth.

The redevelopment plan and assessment is expected to assist in managing future capacity constraints.

“Ports are critical to Fiji’s economic and infrastructure growth, and we thank Australia for supporting this critical first step in redeveloping the Lautoka foreshore,” Fiji Ports chief executive officer, Vajira Piyasena said.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald, said the agreement would enable Fiji Ports to plan for the future of the Lautoka foreshore and to create jobs for Fiji’s Western Division.

“We are also financing, alongside ANZ Fiji, the maintenance and upgrades to Nadi’s International Airport, and several outer island runways – better connecting Fijians domestically and internationally,” he said.

“Our work with the Fiji Roads Authority is rehabilitating nine bridges, and resurfacing roads across Viti Levu.

“And we are working to identify other projects that will make a difference to the growth of this nation – including in renewable energy and climate adaptation.”
