Businesses could soon be restored at Malau as interest heightens in the prospects of establishing a veneer pine production plant.
An Australian-based businessman has indicated interest in taking over Fiji Forest Industries Limited’s (FFI) facility at Malau, Labasa.
FFI’s sawmill was shut down by Fiji Pine Limited in May 2019.
“The businessman was really happy with the location and indicated interest to change mill infrastructure at his own cost,” Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said.
“During a one-day visit, forestry officers took him to logging sites.”
Employment for 200 locals is secured for the export manufacturing company when it opens.
Markets will be established in China and India.
Fiji Pine Group of Companies chairperson and acting chief executive officer Rakuita Vakalalabure said he was not aware of the development.
