Fiji as a technology hub for the Pacific, suffers from digital poverty, an Information Technology (IT) expert has said.
The country needs a contingency plan to protect Fijians from scams and related matters, said Swaran Ravindra.
She is the acting head of IT at the Fiji National University’s National Training & Productivity Centre (NTPC).
Businesses would continue to suffer some setbacks because of widespread fraudulent activities, said Ms Ravindra.
As a preparation measure, NTPC will bring together stakeholders at the National Conference on Information Technology to be held at Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi, next week.
“As long as digital poverty is there, citizens will not have their rights to digital spaces,” she said.
“Digital rights are human rights.
“We need to help those that are, which include the elderly and persons living with disabilities (PWD).”
