As the country gets well into the sugarcane crushing and processing season, farmers in the Western Division are hard at work to ensure timely supply of cane to the mills.
Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive, Sundresh Chetty, said farmers are working really hard during this period of the year.
“Harvesting is progressing really well and the farmers are putting in the extra effort to ensure timely supply of sugarcane to the mills,” he said.
Mr Chetty said the cane supply to the mills has been good and the mills are settling into the crushing season.
Mr Chetty has also urged people to refrain from deliberately setting fires to sugarcane fields.
Police Spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, said the Fiji Police Force is taking the matter seriously and anyone caught doing this will face penalties.
He said Police are now patrolling areas and investigations are continuing into previous cane fires.
Mohammed Faizad, of Sabeto said he lost close to seven tonnes of sugarcane on his farm because of what he claims as deliberate fires being set.
“It is very dry and hot and if people continue to do this, we can lose our whole harvest as the fire will spread very quickly,” Mr Faizad said.
“Growers work hard on the field and this is their source of income. So I request members of the public to take this into consideration.”
