Allows miner to conduct Mount Kasi prospecting

Newcrest Exploration (Fiji) Limited has confirmed the Mineral Resources Department has granted it a Special Prospecting License (SPL) 1504 for Wailevu West.
Newcrest country manager, Greg Morris, said the site includes the former Mount Kasi mine area.
He, however, said the license will allow Newcrest to conduct exploration activities only. It does not involve reopening the Mt Kasi Mine.
The first phase of the exploration project is already underway.
This is to undertake a detailed environmental baseline study to determine existing environmental conditions in the area.
“The study will be undertaken by Jacobs SKM – an Australian consulting firm – in conjunction with the University of the South Pacific’s Institute of Applied Science,” Mr Morris said.
“Newcrest has had discussions with the landowners and other key stakeholders about the proposed exploration programme.
“Further consultations with landowners are planned prior to the start of the exploration programme.”
Mr Morris said work to establish a small exploration base and initial field surveys will commence shortly and exploration drilling will follow the completion of the environmental baseline study.

- Further consultations with landowners are planned prior to the start of the exploration programme
- Newcrest expects to employ a small number of local people to assist with the exploration and associated environmental program. Local service providers and suppliers will also be used wherever possible
