A Chartered Accountant must set the standard

Alipate Naiorosui, a chartered accountant, has been the chief executive of the Housing Authority for the past 11 years. And for the past 21 years, he has been in the accounting profession.
He will, retire on June 30 as the authority’s chief executive.
No doubt Mr Naiorosui has played a critical role in the Housing Authority’s performance during his tenure, not only as the chief executive, but as an employee.
“As an accountant, I have learnt and tried to contribute positively to grow all organisations I have served in,” he said.
“I have enjoyed the friendship with staff/customers and networking with stakeholders all these years.”
Mr Naiorosui has also served on over 10 Boards both in the private and public sector, being Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) Board chairman at present.
Mr Naiorosui has attended Ratu Kadavulevu School.

In 2003, Mr Naiorosui was awarded the “Young Accountant of the Year” award by the Fiji Institute of Accountants. This was the same year he was appointed as chief executive of Housing Authority

“At RKS, I developed my skills and better understanding of accounting and economics which was also introduced for the first time during my time there,” he said.
“I was good at Maths, both in Primary and Secondary School at RKS.”
Mr Naiorosui joined the University of the South Pacific and graduated with a BA (Accounting/Economics) in 1992 and MBA Degree in 1999.

What would your advice be to prospective accountants?
Set this as your Goal and put it into action. Stay focussed and be committed throughout the journey whether in school, University and work.

What does it take to be successful in this career/field which has so many people graduating in every year?
The profession and job market now is very competitive. Employers have more choices to make. There is no substitute for hard work, humility and perseverance. Promotions and Success will come naturally your way. Above all, believe and trust in the Lord to guide you every day.

How would you describe accounting standards in Fiji?
The Fiji Institute of Accountants is doing a great job and we follow/comply with International Standards closely.

What are things which in your view a CA should do?
Be a role model to society and contribute to Civic/Community development works; they need good advice to succeed, be honest in your work, always give your best

How important is a CA for (i) a business (ii) a country?
In my humble view a Chartered Accountant (CA) must set the standard, and be recognised whether you are operating a business or leading an organisation or a country.

What are some challenges you have faced in your career?
I met many challenges but overcame them all, it is part of life. One has to remain positive at all times and move on.
