Seven new closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras were yesterday commissioned at the Queens Wharf in Lautoka.
Besides enhancing security and adhering to international port compliance measures, these new cameras are also expected to improve the performance and efficiency of port officials.
Commissioner Western, Commander Joeli Cawaki, said though these new cameras were an upgrade, there had been room for improvement as the cameras would allow port officials to view those in Suva and vice-versa.
“This will also give an opportunity for people in the company to have mobile access to the surveillance system,” he said.
“It is a requirement that we need to have and one we need to put in place so that we are on par with other countries.
“For Fiji to improve its trade, these are the type of equipment we will need to have in our ports.”
The equipment was installed by Professional Electronics and replaces an old batch of CCTV equipment.
Addressing officials from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji and Fiji Ports Terminal, Commander Cawaki said it was not a system to watch their backs but to see the right things were being done.
“It is not to penalise how people conduct their work but is a tool to assist the management to improve on performance,” he said.
“The ports in Lautoka and Suva, we have seen losing that efficiency for some time
“That is why we have this expense that comes at the port so we can improve our efficiency.”
