Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU) general secretary, Attar Singh was on the road to Nadi last Friday evening to attend the National Federation Party annual general meeting and convention when he heard about the offence provision in the amended law affecting trade unionists.
The Attorney- General and Minster Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said last Friday that those who continue to take part in election campaigning and electoral activities while still holding public office would risk a fine or a term of imprisonment or both.
Mr Singh, along with other trade unionists, chose to stay away from the meeting venue.
“It’s a sad day but I will have to follow the laws for the sake of our members.” He will be making a decision soon regarding his political aspirations. Mr Singh also congratulated both the newly elected party leader and president.
