Brisbane: Queensland’s cattle industry is in crisis, with prices falling below those seen during the 1970s beef slump, graziers say.
Up to 1000 graziers will meet with federal and state agriculture ministers at the beef industry’s crisis summit in Richmond in the state’s northwest today.
“We’ll be letting those people know in no uncertain terms the plight of the industry and putting up solutions,” said Barry Hughes, a summit organiser and chairman of the Northern Gulf Graziers Group. “We appreciate any assistance that comes our way, but we’re not looking for handouts, we’re looking at sustainability.”
He said two years ago, a head of cattle sold for $500; now it’s going for just $20.
“The 1970s beef slump was a significant time frame.”
