One place I would take every visitor to would be the Eco Trax in Sigatoka.

It’s Fiji’s first electric powered velocipede.

Certainly a very unique way to discover the Coral Coast.

Not only that, I have never seen so many beautiful butterflies and goats as you’re going along the track. Incredible!

It was absolutely amazing.

The friendly staff, the food, the environment.

Definitely going back there again.

She is the sales manager and business associate of Harcourt.

Where Would You Take Friends To, And Why?
Musket Cove is my go-to place with family, visiting friends and local contacts.

I can commute back and forth into Nadi for work on a daily basis, if needed.

This makes my life combining visitors and work commitments all at once really easy and fun.

Nothing nicer than taking a boat to work!

The Island Bar at Musket has always been an absolute must with my three daughters.

We love the Musket Cove team – they are just so much fun.

We have been known to miss the boat back to Nadi on purpose.

Let’s Go Local: Spiritual Namrata Charan Singh Will Take You To The Naag Temple In Labasa

Namrata Charan Singh is definitely a high achiever.

Her father is businessman and politician Charan Jeath Singh owner of Charan Jeath Singh Group where she is the executive director.

In today’s feature, we get up close and personal with the recently engaged Ms Singh who considers herself spiritual and believes in karma.

Things people may not know about you.
– I don’t like coffee (hard for people to believe considering I am a Kiwi as well).

– I am a graceful dancer and have taken part in many stage performances (still do).

–  I am a good cook (especially with Indian and Chinese dishes).

How Many Places Have You Visited Around Fiji?
I have been to Savusavu and Taveuni in the North.

I have also been around Viti Levu and to all the towns and cities.

I have visited some islands in the Mamanuca Group including Beachcomber, Castaway and Malamala.

What is the one place in Fiji you would take visitors to, and why?
I would take them to Labasa.

One of the reasons would be to visit the Naag Mandir (Temple).

The solace and energy transformation it offers brings positive vibes within you.

Secondly, the three sisters mountain is another place to see.

It is the highest peak of the Macuata province and has its own historic legend.

Moreover, I would encourage visitors to visit our new Gurbachan Singh Mall in Labasa which is one of its kind for Fiji.

It is the new meeting spot for locals and a place for visitors to checkout.

It has a food court, shops, gaming centre, bar, cinema and most importantly it has lots of historic photos of Labasa all around the mall.

Finally, although Fijians in general are said to be very hospitable, Labasa has the friendliest people.

That is why we are known as the friendly north.

In fact, one cool fact is that one of our hotel’s in Labasa is called the Friendly North Inn as well!

Our other hotel in Labasa which is the Grand Eastern Hotel featuring an outdoor swimming pool and a pool side bar is another beauty worth visiting, staying at or even dining at.

What Is Your Favourite Place For Pizza, And Why?
I would say that the best place for pizza would be at our very own Lautoka Hotel in Lautoka.

Those who have tried the pizza there will know what I am talking about.

Those who have not tried yet, should give it a go as they will not regret.

Smart furniture for smart people – that is what Al Hamd Smart Living is all about.

The main purpose behind the introduction of these desks and chairs seven years ago, was to assist schools lessen the burden of having to buy new furniture at the beginning of every year.

A number of schools have purchased these furniture over the past years and realised the savings they have made.

In 2015, the company introduced new smart desks and chairs for Andrews Primary School in Nadi, sponsored by the Office of the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama presented the furniture to the school.

Seven years

This year the company celebrates seven years of making a change in the education sector by providing these smart desks and chairs which are durable and come with a warranty.

Company managing director, Ashfaaq Khan, said he introduced these smart desks and chairs in 2016 for those who believed in tomorrow.

“The durability of this furniture which comes with a five year warranty on welding has saved many schools from having a hospital corner at the start of every term with damaged desks and chairs.

“What makes Al Hamd Smart desk and chairs unique from the rest is because of its unique design.”

Smart

He said they have no issues in regards to untreated or boxing timber usage, no issues of improper glueing or dowel.

“It is light weight which will not have health issues for students, has laminated tops which is not porous at all for any bacteria absorption.”

Besides these unique features, the desk has a larger book case space and also has a side bag hanger while the curved seats ensure the students do not suffer from sciatic nerve /back damage.

Mr Khan said the modern MIG (metal inert gas) welding with thicker metal and powder coating paint meets the warranty requirements.

“The importance of warranty will definitely lead to saving funds and improving other areas such as introducing innovative use of technology and digital tools to aid modern teaching and learning, ” Mr Khan said.

Enquiries can be made with any of Al Hamd Smart Living outlets in Nadi, Lautoka, Labasa and Suva.

Life begins at 50, says a business executive and businessman, Patrick Wise.

He recently launched his roadside stopover.

Mr Wise says it’s never too late to pursue a goal or a dream.

Soccer Fame
Navua’s own former football star, Patrick Wise, met with national fame in his formative years.

He was just 16, when his dribble, tact and speed on the field attracted the attention of many national soccer coaches.

Mr Wise soon became a coveted midfielder.

His soccer stunts at the time were the highlights of his sporting career as the team went on to win the promotion relegation to reach Super Premier division.

Premier Division
At that age, he had the opportunity to be part of the team as some senior players were suspended.

“I took the opportunity with both hands and my football career took off,” he said.

Now, at the dawn of his 50th birthday, he says he is hitting the prime of his life.

“We’re more maturednow and likely to think through decisions,” Mr Wise said.

Operating Hours Under Review
Chicken and Ice Cream Shack is a sight for sore eyes, along the Queens Road at Navua.,

The lofty road-side structure, with its brightly polished wooden walls and glass panels, is first of many fast food establishments Mr Wise plans to open.

The investment, valued at around $100,000, was a transition from his 10 years as a food catering business, which operated under the same name.

“We would have a stall at every festival and carnival in Suva,” he said.

With the lifting of curfew restrictions, opening hours are expected to be reviewed in June.

“It is the ultimate plan to operate 24 hours,” he said.

Anti-Drug Campaign
Mr Wise is originally from Navua.

He attended St Thomas Primary School in Lautoka, before moving home to attend Vashist Muni College.

He was described as one of the country’s most stylish midfielders, demonstrating dribbling skills with speed and agility that were at the time second to none.

He went on to play for Nasinu, Suva, Lami and Rewa.

His stint with Rewa was the longest he had served a soccer club.

Mr Wise was 34 when he hung his boots.

He championed anti-drug efforts within the soccer fraternity, right after his national outburst about the reality within the sport.

“I revealed it all,” Mr Wise said.

“When the team travels to a match, the bus is divided into two – those who smoke drugs sit at the back, while those that do not smoke drugs sit in the front.

“That was a normal thing.”

Business Background
He has served Goodman Fielder for the past 24 years, where he has learnt the ropes about business management.

He continues to serve the company in a managerial sales role.

“Football has taught me a lot about discipline so that’s an advantage for me,” Mr Wise said.

“Some of my competitiveness and discipline learnt on the field.

“I apply it in my day to day work.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to play the sport for so long without serious injury.”

Fiji has potential to grow more food, Fiji Rice Limited general manager Ashrit Pratap.

He made the point after realising Fiji was heavily dependent on imports.

“I encourage everyone to grow their own food in whatever capacity they can,” Mr Pratap said.

The Koronubu native of Ba, is a graduate of University of the South Pacific where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Management and Public Administration.

He comes from a farming background, and has future plans to professionally continue working in the agriculture sector.

Mr Pratap’s ultimate dream is to personally invest in his own farm.

COVID-19 Impact
The global COVID-19 pandemic encouraged more focus on agricultural need and development, and food security, he said.

There was no downtime, and no job losses at Fiji Rice Limited.

“We have both commercial and social responsibility to produce rice for our people so we are operating at full capacity,” Mr Pratap said.

Operations costs have increased, he said.

To address this. Fiji Rice Limited implemented measures, such as:
– improving its mills,

– assisting farmers in terms of free cartage to the mill,

– offering above-world-market-price of paddy,

– medical insurance, and

– parametric insurance scheme for farmers.

“The company also carried out farm projects and joint ventures with potential farmers and landowners,” Mr Pratap said.

“The idea is basically to get all stakeholders working together to assist each other in times of crisis.”

“We hope to be able to offer employment for local Fijians as we grow.”

“In the long term, we hope to be able to grow Hi Oleic peanuts in Fiji, as a new agricultural export.”

Let’s Go Local: Joske’s Thumb on Hamilton’s List

Whenever Chris Hamilton drives past or catches a glimpse of the iconic Joske’s Thumb, he gets the notion that the peak is laughing back at him.

That’s because for this Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji resident manager, Joske’s Thumb has always been on his bucket.

He is inspired by the great mountaineer, the late Sir Edmund Hillary.

Mr Hamilton, an Aussie, moved to Fiji in 2009.

He is an adventure and loves the outdoors.

He has travelled extensively to countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and New Zealand, before moving here.

“Something that I have always wanted to do but haven’t as yet is to climb Joske’s thumb,” he said.

He has spent most of his time in the beautiful Coral Coast with his family.

“I am blessed with a beautiful wife and two very active young boys,” Mr Hamilton said.

“We are a real Coral Coast family.”

“We got married at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, my first son was born when we were living at Outrigger Fiji Beach Re- sort and my second son was born here at Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji.”

Mr Hamilton is a family man and in his spare time enjoys a swing on the golf course.

How many places have you visited in Fiji?
I have been lucky to see quite a bit around Fiji, including some outer islands, Vanua Levu and have covered Viti Levu pretty comprehensively.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes.

What is one place in Fiji you would take visitors to and why?
I absolutely love the Sigatoka Sand dunes.

The natural rugged beauty of the dunes looking out to the Pacific Ocean is like nowhere else.

The conservation work that the National Trust of Fiji does there is fantastic, and I truly feel so grateful to have it on my doorstep.

I would really encourage people to get down there and enjoy the national park with their family or friends (running up the dunes is optional).

But this day wouldn’t be complete without a few sunset drinks at our Bilo Bar on Yanuca Island to unwind and reflect on the awesome day.

The Coffee Hub

The Coffee Hub

What is your favorite place for coffee / pie and why?
I do tend to spend most of my coffee time at work but outside of that, I take my hat off to the team at the Coffee Hub on the Nadi Back Road.

The coffee is great and the food is always super tasty.

My kids always bug me for the oversized doughnuts and the service is always really welcoming and friendly.

They are doing a fantastic job.

What is your favourite backyard spot and why?
The Beach Bar and Grill down in Korotogo is definitely my go-to spot when I need a great meal in a relaxed setting.

It’s a perfect spot to spend time with family, friends and catch up with people from up and down the coast.

Jackie and Dean (the owners) are amazingly friendly and make everyone feel so welcome.

Call a day in advance to have them arrange crab or lobster.

Joske's Thumb is a precipitous volcanic plug that rises in the skyline to the west of Suva, Fiji. It is located 15 kilometers west of Suva and its base is accessible from Naikorokoro Road, which connects Naikorokoro Village to Queens Road. Joske’s Thumb is considered one of the toughest summits to ascend in Fiji. The peak is named after Paul Joske, one of Suva’s pioneer settlers. Joske and his son, Adolf Brewster, started Fiji’s first sugar mill, importing machinery and beginning the country’s sugar industry. Joske’s Thumb is an enticing spectacle for serious climbers. What is one place in Fiji that remains on your bucket list and why?
Something that I have always wanted to do but haven’t as yet is to climb Joske’s Thumb.

Every time I drive past or see it, I think it is laughing at me.

I love the history that Sir Edmund Hilary climbed and I just think it would be an awesome experience to do.

It is such an iconic landmark and I would love to stand at the top and look back to Suva and across the ocean.
