Digicel gets into providing Cloud services

By SHEIK DEAN

Digicel Fiji has introduced a disaster data recovery technology using Cloud Services.
Digicel Fiji head of ICT services Craig Smith said Digicel has invested in Cloud-based technology giving companies the option to safely backup their data in a secure location and onshore.
He said this brings good news for entrepreneurs to secure their information in case of disasters such as fire, human error, man-made or natural disasters.
A seminar was held in Nadi yesterday to create awareness of the value and benefits of disaster preparedness and Digicel’s new technology for businesses
Organised by Digicel Fiji and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction at Tanoa International Hotel, the breakfast seminar was attended by business executives and IT experts.
“The recent business fires and Fiji now in its cyclone season meant it is important for businesses to secure all relevant company data,” he said.
“With instant recoverability and data being password protected by the clients, means no one else including Digicel can view the information,’’ Mr Smith said.
He said during natural disasters and server failures, getting the business online could take several days but with Digicel’s new technology, businesses can be up and running with the client’s defined timeframe.
With no capital investment and regarded as a running expense, the Cloud Service is divided in four steps which include on-site back-up, off-site back up at Digicel Data Center, ship to site recovery and business continuity suite.

Businesses at risk
Head of United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Pacific Timothy Wilcox said the average cost of disaster in Fiji is US$79 million a year from cyclones and earthquakes.
This, he stressed, was three per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Mr Wilcox said economic recovery and business recovery are interrelated.
