The Fiji Commerce Commission has raised concerns about the decrease in dairy prices in New Zealand not being reflected in what Fonterra sells to Fiji.
Commission chairman, Dr Mahendra Reddy, said: “Recently, we have noticed that while milk and dairy prices in New Zealand has decreased slightly, we have not seen any corresponding decrease here.”
Dr Reddy said the commission has written to Fonterra expressing concerns in this regards.
New Zealand’s Fonterra is one of the World’s biggest dairy products exporters.
“We are watching their conduct and if things don’t change, we will formally take this issue up with the New Zealand Commerce Commission,” he said.
Comments are being sought from Fonterra.
Dairy product price increase
Meanwhile, in terms of the recent increase in the price of dairy products, Dr Reddy said prices of milk are driven my market conditions and not via Commerce Commission pricing.
“We only set prices at the retail level and not ex-factory or wholesale,” he said.
