Human resources in Fiji needs a lot of development, says the president of the Fiji Human Resources Institute, Balbeer Singh.
Therefore in a bid to uplift the professionalism standards of this profession, a workshop was organised by the institute yesterday.
The ‘Development of Human Resource Practitioners Workshop’ was held at the Holiday Inn Suva.
Mr Singh said: “We want everybody in the organisation to understand how important human resources is.
“At the same time, we want them to comply with the laws to make sure they don’t have issues in the organisation.”
At the moment, he said many organisations had issues with the Employment Regulation Promulgation where they did not comply, made the wrong decisions and ended up in mediation and tribunal.
“Those were the things we need to promote to make sure that organisations make best practices,” Mr Singh said.
“After the workshop, we hope the participants will be able to take back the information and add value to it by transacting the messages into their organisation.”

Participants challenged
The Minister for Labour, Jone Usamate, challenged the workshop participants from various organisations to develop a good faith employment relationship with the staffs of the organisation.
“As human resource officers, you must work in collaboration with the staff in good faith as this is something that is embedded in the Employment Relations Promulgation,” he said.
He said the labour laws are there for workers to self regulate themselves and resolve any issues amongst the workers.
