Fijian Flying circus opens in Rakiraki this weekend, where another great turnout is expected.
Organised by VOU Dance, the week-long show in Rakiraki is an effort to take the circus to local communities.
The team were setting up at Rakiraki yesterday, as they prepare for this Saturday’s opening.
Every year, VOU carries out a youth talent search across the country, where locals are accommodated, paid in a two year course.
However, the search could be challenging given the lack of discipline, said VOU director Sachiko Soro.
“They come from villages and settlements, from different towns and cities,” she said.
“Of the 20 we recruit, 12 would be next level phenomenal.”
VOU Dance’s workforce comprises 52 per cent women.
The drawback was in traditional and cultural expectations of women, she said.
“Women drop out because families often expect them to attend to domestic responsibilities if an elder is sick,” Ms Soro said.
