Mechanical harvester operators and cooperatives in Labasa are ready to begin the harvesting of sugar cane today.

Vanua Levu Cane Harvesters Association president Aiyub Khan said there were more than 40 mechanical harvesters in the North to assist the 10 sectors.

Some are owned by individuals, cooperatives and Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

“We are really happy with the assistance provided by the Government and Ministry of Sugar in terms of preparation for 2024 season,” Mr Khan said.

“I have already informed those who will be using mechanical harvester to harvest their farm to take advantage of this good weather and to transport cane to the mill as soon as possible.”

He said many operators were excited because the weather was cool during the morning and afternoon, which is favourable.

Necessary teamwork

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive officer Vimal Dutt is also advising sugar cane farmers and harvesting gangs to harvest while the weather is good and avoid tail end harvesting.

“Due to climate change, our weather is unpredictable and like the previous season, we will receive rain,” Mr Dutt said.

“It is important that everyone involved in this sugar industry work together to harvest and transport cane to the mill so that sugar can be produced.”

He was also advising farmers to make sure to continue with the planting programme parallel with the harvesting in progress.

“On behalf of the council I wish everyone involved in 2024 season all the best and may we continue to work and produce better results than last year,” he said.
