Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the heartbeat of the Fijian economy and local way of life. They could be an indigenous-owned handicraft shop at the Suva Flea Market or a small neighbourhood convenience store.

Shobna Singh is a mum of four who has been running her own convenience store, Shobna’s Variety Investment at 31 Loftus Street in Suva for a year now.

Born in Labasa but raised in an Indian settlement in Vatubogi, Bua, Ms Singh spent most of her adult life alternating between working in sales at local timber companies and being a homemaker.

She says her work experience and the support of her husband, James Naidu gave her the tools and confidence she needed to start her business.

“I had saved some money and an opportunity to open my own business came up, so I went for it,” she said.

Naturally, Ms Singh has dealt with the ups and downs of being a first-time business owner.

“Business slowed down around the time of the Elections, then it picked up, before slowing again when the new VAT came into effect,” she said.

“But you work through it.”

When she is not managing her store, Ms Singh enjoys spending quality time with her family at her home in Cunningham.

SunBiz spoke with the entrepreneur to learn about her business, and her best food and travel experiences in Fiji.
