An employee of the Ministry of Sugar has been caught red handed for twisting information to discredit the good work made by the Government in the sugar industry.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday by the Permanent Secretaryfor Sugar, Lieutenant-Colonel ManasaVaniqi.

“I can confirm we have identified a worker who has been twisting information about the good work done by the Government in the ministry and this has to stop,” he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said the sad thing was the worker was telling people that all the good work done in the Ministry of Sugar was that of the Fiji Labour Party leader, MahendraChaudhary.

He said he would look into the matter but could not say what action the ministry would take.

“This is serious, especially when the employee knows of all the positive developments the Government has done for the Fiji Sugar Corporation,” Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said.

initiative

Last week, the Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, handed pension chequesfor 380 people over the age of 70 through the Rarawai/Penang Cane Producers Association.

The worker was quick to relay that this was not a Government initiative.

In presenting the cheques the Prime Minister said “This money comes from a fund set up under the Fairtrade initiative.

“This initiative was allowed and supported by my government and in conjunction with the Fiji Sugar Corporationand Tate and Lyle.

“Today we see one of the results of this collaboration.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said the National Farmers Union, an arm of the Fiji Labour Party, had been against the Fairtrade initiative.

“But now that the farmers were benefiting, it had tried to claim that this was their initiative,” he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqisaid some workers in the ministry were ardent supporters of the political party.

He has urged them to be apolitical when carrying out their works.

“The sugar industry is now apolitical and there is no room for politicians,” he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel VaniqiVaniqi confirmed the ministry does not like to be engaged in politics, as past politicians had politicised the sugar industry simply for their personal benefit.
