A $3 million expansion is paying off for a company that has included a US-made state-of the art computer-controlled advanced industrial incinerator to its gas-fueled crematorium facility.
The Nakasi-based operation, which features biodegradable clay urns, was introduced in August last year, after a decade of using the facility as a gas-fire crematorium.
The introduction of the gas-fueled crematorium marked the dawn of a new era of conducting funerals in Fiji, when it opened in 2012, said Brazil-born managing director, Maurice Ruggiero.
“The idea of expanding and building the incinerator is to allow for proper disposal of old confidential documents, expired medication, and hazardous waste,” he said.
A first for Fiji, the gas-fueled incinerator heats up anywhere between 900-1000 degrees Celsius, Mr Ruggiero said.
“It is used to dispose of medical waste, expired medications, sensitive documents, and animal cremations,” he said.
Mr Ruggiero said the advanced incinerator meets stringent international emission standards in respect of emission of particulates and smoke.
