Speaking at Narewa Village over the weekend, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told villagers that Government was against the idea of a toll being imposed on the bridge.
Initially, Denarau Corporation Limited had wanted a loan from Government to build a new bridge to allow access to Denarau Island.
It was then proposed that in order to pay back the loan, Denarau Corporation would impose a toll on the bridge.
People wanting to access the island would then need to pay a fee.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said by imposing a toll, ordinary Fijians who work on the island would have been unnecessarily burdened.
He said it was then decided that Government may consider taking over the existing bridge and see how a new one could be facilitated.
Finer details of the agreement is yet to be finalised.
