Government’s Fijian Crafted and Fijian Made initiative is proving to be a hit with Mana Island Resort.
New general manager Ulrich Hoffgen said he was impressed with the Fijian Crafted initiative.
He confirmed he will be visiting a number of villages on Mana Island and other islands in the Mamanucas to see what types of Fijian handicraft can be bought to be sold off in the resort.
Mr Hoffgen said he did not want to call up his purchasing department and get them to buy handicraft sold in established shops on the mainland.
He said he recognised that through this initiative, Government wanted the Fijian people to be the real beneficiaries, and keeping this in mind, he will be personally visiting villages and checking out their handicraft.
Mr Hoffgen said he understood that some countries such as Australia and New Zealand may have issues with border control about untreated handicraft.
He said to counter this, he would have discussions with villages to see how Fijian handicraft can be treated before being sold off to tourists.

Resort performance
For the past few weeks, Mana Island Resort has been operating on more than 90 per cent occupancy, reaching 100 per cent on some days.
Mr Hoffgen has recognised the importance tourism industry plays in the lives of Fijians and said he was ready assist in the employment side of things as well.
Recently, Mr Hoffgen took a trip to the nearest village and interviewed some 30 villagers to take up posts in the resort.
Mr Hoffgen said out of this 30, 14 have already been hired and are undergoing training at the resort. More will be hired after the first batch finish their training.
