Fiji was applauded as a good leadership role model for Pacific islands during the first SIDS DOCK Pacific Regional Meeting at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi last week.
The panel was informed that Fiji hoped to have 90 per cent renewable energy by 2015.
Chair of the SIDS DOCK Steering Committee, Vince Henderson, said: “Fiji through the commissioning of the 40 Mega Watts Nadarivatu Hydro Power Project is an eye opener for the Pacific island countries.
“This project can be replicated to address energy issues faced by small island developing states in the Pacific.
“Fiji’s renewable energy generation through this project will give answers to heavy dependence on fossil fuels used for generators to produce electricity.”

Future projects
Director of Energy Peceli Nakavulevu confirmed the Department of Energy is looking at two more renewable energy projects.
“The Fiji Electricity Authority has submitted two sites for feasibility studies which include Navua River and Wailoa Hydro site,” he said.
“These two projects have been submitted to SIDS DOCK for consideration.
“Fiji believes that we can carry out feasibility studies and funded under the SIDS DOCK committee.
“Another project that Fiji has submitted to the Committee is bio-fuels project.”
