The University of Fiji yesterday announced the appointment of Dr Kieran James as the university’s new Accounting professor.
This is in a bid to comply with the Fiji Institute of Accountants regulations.
The president of the Fiji Institute of Accountants, Cama Raimuria, had earlier indicated the University of Fiji did not meet the accreditation criteria.
This was after the University failed to appoint an Accounting Professor at the Lautoka-based University.
Therefore, in order to comply with the Fiji Institute of Accountants regulations, the University contracted the Australian national to head the Accounting studies at the institute.
Dr Kieran has worked more than 25 years in the field of Accounting as an associate and senior lecturer at well-known Universities and research Universities in Australia and Singapore.
Continuing with research
Following his appointed, Dr Kieran said he is motivated to build up the research culture at the University. This would be to keep his research going and at the same time train his young staffs and students in developing further in Accounting.
“While at the University, I will train and mentor the staffs and the younger staffs who are motivated in the research trying to develop the number of publications in the country,” he said.
He hopes to see the University become a research point for Accountants and becomes an attraction to the other accounting institutes.
“I hope to bring an Accounting conference in country this year called the International Conference of Critical Accounting which is a global conference usually held in New York,” Dr Kieran said.
Dr Kieran in the meantime hopes that the Fiji Institute of Accountants considers his contract with the university and gives the an accreditation to the Accounting Graduates.
