Harvesting of premature ginger has started already for this year. This was confirmed by Deputy Secretary Agriculture, Uraia Waibuta.
Normally harvesting is done around February, March and April for its specific market.
The premature ginger is processed by two big companies like Kaming Agro Processing Limited in Navua and Frespac Ginger (Fiji) Limited in Lami.
Frespac operations manager Satish Kumar said: “This year we have 2200 tonnes of premature ginger supplied by farmers which will be our supply till the next season.
“The challenges we face is sometimes we don’t get enough supply and we face a lot of problems with raw materials.”
Mr Kumar said they have plans of diversifying but not at the moment as there is a lot of competition in the market especially pricing from China and Thailand.
