An estimated $99.2 million worth of construction work was put in place during the December quarter of 2013.
The amount is $2.2 million or 2.2 per cent higher than in the September quarter of 2013 and is $27.0 million or 37.5 per cent higher than in the December quarter of 2012.
These are findings from the 2013 December Quarter survey covering enterprises engaged in construction work both the private sector and the general Government.
New Buildings and capital repairs
The value of work put in place for new buildings and capital repairs was $36.2 million, a decrease of $0.7 million or 2.1 per cent compared to the September quarter of 2013 but a $5.6 million or 18.3 per cent increase over the December quarter of 2012.
The value of work put in place for non-residential buildings and residential buildings were $29.0 million and $7.2 million respectively. These were mainly for construction work on commercial buildings, shops, religious and educational institutions.
Current repairs and maintenance
For current repairs and maintenance, 94.2 per cent of the value of work done was for the Private Sector and 5.8 per cent for the general Government. From the total estimated value of work put in place of $9.1 million, 14.4 per cent were for residential buildings and 85.6 per cent were for non-residential buildings.
Civil engineering works
For civil engineering works, 31.4 per cent of the value of work done was for the Private sector and 68.6 per cent for the general government. From the total estimated value of work put in place of $53.9 million, 24.1 per cent were for earthmoving works, 64.2 per cent were for roads and bridge works and 11.7 per cent were for other types of work.
Annual 2013
The estimated total value of work put in place for 2013 was $360.3 million, an increase of $81 million or 29 per cent when compared to the previous year. The increase is mainly due to ongoing projects and civil engineering works carried out for repair and upgrading of roads around the country.
